Pinning it Down {3} Winter Trees

Welcome to our third Pinning it Down Tuesday! Do you find yourself pinning projects to Pinterest, but rarely getting around to doing them? Do you need a bit of encouragement to make some of those projects come to life? Join Pam and me every Tuesday for the Pinning it Down link-up, where we're making a Pinterest project happen in our homes every week.

This week, the kids and I broke out the masking tape and watercolors to make winter trees from the Frugal Family Fun blog. It's been awhile since I've planned an art activity for the kids. They do their own art projects, but mama-led projects are one of those things that dropped off the priority list this pregnancy.

On Saturday afternoon I was feeling a bit worn out. Gah! I thought, I haven't even decided on a Pinning it Down project for this week! I scanned my pin boards, saw this craft and thought- not too messy, not too much work. I explained the project to the kids and then read aloud while they worked. It was such a sweet and peaceful way to spend a Saturday evening.

We all enjoyed the evening enormously, and now I have pretty artwork on display in the dining room to remind me that I'm not always the Laziest Pregnant Woman on the Planet. Often, perhaps. But not always. ;)

First, we used ripped up masking tape strips on heavy watercolor paper to form bare winter trees. We pushed the tape down really well.

We briefly discussed warm and cool colors, but mostly I just gave the kids each a tray of watercolors and let 'em at it. I encouraged them to paint all the way to the edges of their paper.

After the pictures dried completely, we carefully peeled off the tape. I was surprised at how easily it came off.

They came out well! The kids love having something to do with their hands while I read aloud.

Are you ready to play along? Here's how our link-up works:
1. Choose a project from one of your Pinterest pinboards and make it happen. Blog a little about it. Remember, it doesn't have to be elaborate- we just want to see what you've been up to!

2. Make sure you link back here somewhere in your post so others can find us and play along. Feel free to grab our Pinning it Down graphic if you'd like to add it to your post. Also, don't forget proper pinning etiquette and try to include a link back the original idea whenever possible. We want to be sure that cool idea credit is given to the proper person.

3. Link up below. Make sure you're sending us to your actual post, and not to your general blog address. You can add your link all the way through Friday, so if you haven't gotten a chance to work on any of your pins yet this week, you're not too late.

  6. I pinned that too! And these turned out great. Another wonderful thing is now I know my kids would struggle with this one -- they wouldn't be able to tear the tape. We will save it for at least another year. Thanks for sharing.

Blessings on your last four weeks of pregnancy.

PS I hope you have some super easy pins for after baby is born :)

  10. I love those trees. They allow the artists to play around the color yet seems guaranteed to have a nice effect.

  13. I love your children's trees and the fact that they all turned out so differently. We just talked in my class today about how much our personality's play into our art. Very fun project!

  14. Mommy-led art projects have been a little thin around here since I was pregnant, too, and my baby's nearly a year old! My kids usually play with play-do while I read aloud chapter books, but having them paint during that time is a great idea! These turned out great, and I bet the kids were pleased with their masterpieces!

  16. What a great idea to set up an art project during read aloud time! Why has this not occurred to me? Love the personalities coming through on your childrens' trees.

I REALLY want to participate in Pinning It Down but my blog banner is all messed up and I have nothing on my sidebars. I feel like I'd be inviting people over during a major home remodeling. ;-)
