Oof. That was a rough week. It started Sunday, when my already-hard-to-manage-morning-sickness took on a stomach virus and sent my poor innards spiraling out of control. I spent Monday in the hospital getting juiced up on IV fluids, and then Tuesday feeling like I was at death's door. I'm not actually sure I've ever been quite that sick before! The upsides:
1- I'm feeling quite a bit better now.
2- I'm officially out of the first trimester. Cue the Hallelujah chorus!!!
3- We got another peek at the babies and they are both doing great (and my- so much bigger than they were last time!).
4- My husband and oldest daughter showed off their rock-star status around the house. Seriously, Andy pulled out all the stops around here, and when he couldn't be here my 11-year-old ran the show. She runs it well, as you know.

This picture makes me laugh. Sometimes, baby doesn't really need to be entertained. She just needs to be close to someone she loves. :)

We had a great conversation about Bare-Bones Homeschooling- did you miss it? I
thoroughly enjoyed reading through all of the comments, and between
your words of wisdom, my husband's advice, and a little 2x4 on the side
of the head (ahem), I've realized that I'm going to have to cut down
more than I was originally planning to. It's so hard to figure out
what's important and what's gravy when everything looks... important! Kim
reminded me that pretty much nobody gets that all done on a daily
basis, new babies or not. (I figure Kim ought to know- she has ten kids,
see.)
I think I'll let go of the extensive memory work for now. We do IEW's poetry memorization program, which is excellent and enjoyable, so we'll hold off on the rest of it. And then we'll depend on read-alouds and independent reading times for the bulk of the rest of the learning (which is what you pretty much all told me to do anyway). One of my anonymous commenters told us what she did with her older son after having a baby :
"When we went to the library (we went every other week) he had a list of books he had to select. Not titles, just types. He had to select a biography, poetry, science, history, fiction, award winning, fairy tale, project based (a book that had things he could do - art projects, science experiments, things to build, etc.), audio book. There might have been more, but I'm tired ;) Anyway, I found this really helped him get a variety of reading material to have available. It also sent him down many trails he would have never thought of."
Isn't that a GREAT idea? Yep, I thought so too. :)

I have had some very (veryveryveryvery) generous and fabulous
friends offer to step in and help, in big-gigantic-humongous ways. Like a
dear local friend who offered to tackle Latin with Prim each week,
as well as do some literature and baking stuff with all the kids and
just give me general help. Volunteer. Out of her own free time. For a few hours every week.
I know, right?
And another friend has taken over Prim's writing class, is giving her assignments based on the classical-writing model, edits and gives feedback by email and telephone, and is pretty much letting me lift my hands from that project entirely. (Psst... Tracey... Prim is loving her work for this week! You rock!)
I told you buckets of grace were getting ready to rain down! But even I had no idea how soon and how plenty. Thank you, Jesus!

Do you know what I miss? I miss Pinning it Down.
Remember that? Pam and I co-hosted, and we all did projects from our
Pinboards and then shared them. That was before the whole big
Pinterest-is-going-to-get-you-in-huge-legal-trouble scare. And now? Do I
ever DO anything on my pinboards? No. I need to remedy this. There are
lots of good ideas pinned to my boards- I need to make some of them come
alive.--6--
Did you enter the giveaway on last week's Read-Aloud Revival? I have a winner! The lucky winner of Gladys Hunt's Honey for a Child's Heart is... Charissa. Send me an email, Charissa, and let me know if you'd like the print version or ebook, and I'll get that sent your way.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the discussion- I just love how much conversation we are having at these revivals. Be sure to come back for the next one on February 23rd. We'll be talking all about Books for Boys, so don't miss it.

Some links for your weekend wanderings:

And then you can just oogle over this photo at Creating Beauty. I just keep going back to stare at it.

Oh no!!! I'm so so sorry you went through that! We've been praying for you. I hope you're feeling much better soon.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that anonymous idea! I don't think it would work for my younger ones but my oldest is enough of a bookworm to thrive on that. Of course, that means getting over the going-to-the-library-with-four-children-induced panic attack that I suffer from. I start to get heart palpitations just thinking about you THINKING of planning library trips with three babies.
I miss Pinning it Down, too! I do a ton off of Pinterest but now I don't have an excuse to blog about it and I loved seeing others' posts. I wouldn't mind seeing it again :)
What a blessing to have such help. Amazing!
Thanks for those links...they are great!
O.K. I'll quit blabbering and be done now.
#1 It's all January's fault
ReplyDelete#2 That pictures is so cute.
Boo hiss on the hospital trip! Hope you are feeling better Sarah. And three cheers for friends who jump in at all the right times and places. What a blessing!
ReplyDeleteOh Sarah, I am so sorry you got a stomach virus on top of morning sickness on top of just being pregnant on top of being pregnant with twins!!! I have a phobia of throwing up and January is always a scary month for me. Everywhere you go people are coming down with stomach viruses. I am just so sorry that it hit you. But very glad it is over...at least you get a few months or so of immunity out of it. I hope that it doesn't go through the whole house as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful news otherwise!!!! Yay!!! :)
~Tamie
Yucko! Sorry to hear you got a tummy bug on top of all day sickness...praying all germs stay away for the rest of the pregnancy! What a blessing your friends are...wish I lived closer...I would love to help out, too!
ReplyDeletePax Christi.
Girl, this winter has been a BEAST. I am so sorry you had to endure so much sucky. Glad to hear you're feeling so much better, though!
ReplyDeleteHope you are still mending. Love the picture. I was just thinking the other day (in the shower because that is the only time I get to think, but I digress) of how much I miss Pinning It Down and how wonderful and vibrant it was when we first started it -- such community. And such accountability! And what wonderful friends you have. An angel comes and takes Thomas to run errands with her one day a week. Makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you're on the mend. How scary! Take care. That is a very cute picture of your daughters together.
ReplyDeleteOh my! That must've been scary and terribly sucky...but what a tremendous blessing to get to see your wee ones safe and sound and growing! It's good to hear you're in your 2nd trimester now...I always breathe easier for myself and other moms when the 1st trimester is behind us. XO!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I am glad you are feeling better. Your girl will make a great mama some day. Good work on training her.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea about the reading list. I'm thinking that would be a good idea for summer reading around here. I'm remembering now that when we first started homeschooling I had a friend that did something like this. She made up BINGO cards, and each letter of BINGO was a certain type of book. At the time, only my oldest was a reader, and she is dyslexic...it was pulling teeth to get her to read *anything*, so I just kind of let her read whatever. But this would be a great way to stretch most kids!
ReplyDelete1 - I am glad you are feeling better! Hopefully things will ease up for you now. Don't try to do too much. :-)
ReplyDelete2 - Love, love, love the photo!
5 - If you remember awhile back, I offered to host Pinning It Down/Making It Count Tuesday for you since you and Pam were unable to do so. I don't think people knew that it moved since we only have a handful of link ups on a good day. If you want to rehost, let me know. Or if you just want to post a link without the hassle, I am still here. ;-)
I forgot to put the link to the page - http://www.revolutionoflove.com/blog/?page_id=662#.UR_BK2flfTo :-)
